It's All in the Label!

Updated: Apr 17, 2021

Going green and clean in my beauty and skin care products was no easy transition! Of course, it was an easy decision to make, but to actually find products that resembled anything that I used to use, was very difficult. I mean, how would I even find a replacement for my then beloved Benefit Hoola Bronzer, which as it turns out, contained Parabens. I had many makeup and skin care favourites at the time, but finding out how the ingredients in most streamlined makeup brands actually harmed the body, was something I simply could not ignore. I had to commit to the mission of finding cleaner products for my skin.

Reading labels is the only way to surely steer clear of all the harmful chemicals that could be lurking in your favourite beauty products. I’ve compiled a list of a few toxins to be wary of when making your next beauty purchase:

1. Parabens (To extend the shelf-life of a products, but mimics estrogen in the body—potentially leading to breast cancer and excess weight gain)

2. Aluminum-based compounds (found in deodorants, can mimic estrogen leading to breast cancer and has been claimed to be a neurotoxin)

3. Fragrance (chemical concoctions to add scent to products, but companies are not required to disclose the exact ingredients that goes into “fragrance”)

4. Coal tar (mostly found in lipsticks and eyeshadows, and it is a proven carcinogen)

There are many more ingredients to be vigilant of in streamlined beauty brands and even those claiming to be “natural,” so read those labels!

Comment below some of your favourite green and clean beauty products, as I am always on the lookout for more options!

That’s my healing hint of the day!
